Connecting your home or business

When you order broadband from your preferred retail broadband service provider, they will let you know whether the connection will be installed via an overhead/aerial connection (wired from a pole) or underground (via ducting).

OVERHEAD CONNECTION

Connection via an overhead cable from a telegraph pole near your home is the most common form of connection. If there isn’t one nearby, we may install a pole as part of the installation.

Our dedicated engineers will then chat with you about where you would like the cable to go into your home and connect to your modem, which will have already supplied by your retail broadband provider. They will then discretely run the cable to wherever you want it to be located, drill a small hole (roughly 10mm in size), install the cable and connect it to your modem.

UNDERGROUND CONNECTION

If an overhead connection isn’t possible for your home or business, or you already have some suitable underground ducting in place at your property, then the engineer may install the cable underground (including unblocking ducting if necessary). Once this is agreed, the engineer will discuss with you where you would like the cable to enter your premises. We will place a small NBI™ network unit on the wall inside your premises. This then connects to the modem supplied by your preferred broadband service provider.

Installation can take between 1 hour and up to two days. When you place your order with your broadband provider, they will be able to advise you on a rough timeline and will give you an AM, PM or all day appointment slot, so you can get on with life while you wait for your connected life to begin.

With initial speeds of 1Gb and with a minimum speed of 500Mb, our network will be ready to grow as your data needs do.

Do I really need fibre broadband?

If you’re living in a shared house or have a family, you will certainly have more than one device to connect to the internet at the same time. Many households will have smartphones, TV services, smart speakers and computers all under one roof using the internet. The combined effect of this in homes and businesses around the country means that speeds can slow down. The NBI network is designed to exceed the growing demands of a digital society, ensuring that customers always have a fast and reliable broadband service into the future.

How does fibre broadband work?

NBI fibre broadband uses a network of fibre optic cables to deliver high-speed data over long distances, the length and breadth of Ireland. This data travels down the cables at the speed of light, right into your home or business.

Unlike standard broadband, which relies on older copper based network technologies, the NBI fibre broadband network consists of a full fibre solution that supplies right to your door.
